Chandigarh was built not only
to provide new homes to individuals uprooted by partition but also to
provide a home to institutions which had been forced to relocate. Chief
among these were the Panjab University, the Punjab Engineering College and
the Government College of Arts. Among the new teaching and research
institutions established in Chandigarh in the decade of the 1960s is the
Postgraduate institution of Medical Education and Research and College of
Architecture. These are the institutions of nationwide reputation.Over the
past four decades many more such specialised institutions have been located
here, giving the city a base of highly educated manpower, which will enable
it to move rapidly into the information age.
