Health Situation
[The following is an
abridged version of the report prepared for the Chandigarh Administration's
"Chandigarh 2020" planning exercise. The authors are: doctors V.K. Kak,
Gurnam Singh, A.C.Chowdhary, J.L. Chowdhary, P. Kulhara, and Mr Raghbir
Chand.]
Chandigarh is easily accessible and in view of better health care facilities
available in this city, if attracts a large number of sick persons the
surrounding states. It is unlikely that the health care facilities in the
surrounding states will improve by and therefore, while planning the health
requirement of Chandigarh, one has to keep in mind that this city will be
burdened by the people of the surrounding states for health care for a long
time to come. In Chandigarh the Primary Health Care Services are provided
through a chain of dispensaries, Community Health Centre, Manimajra, and
Sub-centres. Hospital Services play a very vital and role in Primary Health
Care Services.
On analysis of the mortality statistics it was found that 1/3 the deaths
occurred due to some disease of the circulatory system, followed by
infections and respiratory system ailments:
